Surf Shops Roundup

Surf shopLets face it, there aren't that many good surf shops online. The ones that are tend to also be massive retail outlets, which is good because it means your going to get reliable service and a broad selection. To make is easier for everyone to find what they are looking for I've decided to compile a list of the surf shops I check online regularly, and give a little review of each with my personal experiences.

Top Surf Shops Online

  • Tilly's Surf and Skate Shop
Tilly's is pretty great. They offer free shipping on any order over $99 year round, and have a really broad selection with a well designed web site. Based out of California, Tilly's Surf Shop is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year- and currently have over 70 stores in the us. Never had  a problem with this surf shop,
  • Becker Surf Shop
For an online surf shop, Becker Surf has the best product images of any in this roundup. Becker also offers free shipping on any order over $99, and 365 day returns. They currently have 6 shops in California, and have been at the core of the surf industry since 1974. Becker Surf is truly run by some old surf shop dogs. Great place, great service.
  • Pacific Sunwear
Pac Sun is huge. They currently have over 900 retail locations (including the outlet stores) in the United States. This puts them at the front of the pack with circulation, because you simply can't compete with having a close retail option. It's kind of unfortunate that the company has grown to be so large though, because they have lost a bit of touch with the core of the surfing community. But hey, they've got a huge selection and a bunch of retail stores. They aren't going anywhere.
  • CCS Boardshop
CCS is the Pac Sun of the old school mail world. Most of CCS's business comes from their free quarterly catalog, which I recommend everyone subscribe to. The reason I listed CCS here even though its a skate shop and not a surf shop, is because some of the generic CCS branded products offer a great cheap alternative to other more expensive brands. CCS also usually has free shipping offers going on year round so check that out, and make sure you search around for discount codes before you order.
  • Hanger 94
Hanger 94 honestly has kind of an annoying site. But they carry jedidiah, and you can't find clothes from them anywhere else. I shop here solely for that reason. Whoever runs this store though needs to seriously stop keyword loading every page on the damn site cause it makes it almost impossible to use. Other than that they are a good company, with good shipping, and decent service.
  • Island Surf Shop
Kind of a sketchy site, but it loads fast, and they are a great company. They also have the 365 return day policy, and have UPS shipping with tracking on every order. Their corporate motto is "Do Good Things", and they do. Donating to groups like the Surfriders Foundation, and Rip Curl Planet- these guys are the most conscious about their impact on the industry.

So there you have it. A brief roundup of 6 of the biggest surf shops on the Internet. I know I didn't include them all, because there are hundreds- I just wanted to get my experience with these guys out there!

If you have an experience with any of these surf shops, or others please leave a comment here and share your thoughts! Hopefully this will become a hub for shops across the nation.

Skullcandy Headphones

Skullcandy Headphones I remember about 4 years ago when I heard about Skullcandy Headphones how different they were from all the other headphones on the market. I think I was a senior in High School and was still figuring out was I was going to do with myself. Back then, even though it was still really recent, not a lot of companies were producing really unique products for the action sports world. It was a time where everyone was rocking a big white Sony label instead of the unique graphics on Skullcandy Headphones. Even though I may not be a biggest Skullcandy fan in the world, I can respect a company that took the time to broke the mold. Which is why I'm recommending everyone check out the new colorway on the Hesh.

Being a Trendsetter in 5 Easy Steps

Trendsetter

Here are my 5 steps to being a trend setter:

  • Read every magazine you can get you’re hands on for your industry. Blogs like mine may be gaining popularity, but there is still a unique power to print media. If it’s fit to print, there is usually a market for it. There is much less trash in magazines than there is on blogs.
  • Stay true to your locality. Wearing a BBC hoodie in Iraq is a good way to get shot. While if you’re wearing a dank turban with a high thread count in Iraq- I’d be willing to bet people would recognize your style.
  • Live your life. I cannot stress this one enough. If you spend all of your time reading magazines trying to be cool, you’re never going to be cool. You need to get out, go skateboard, go snowboard, go shopping at the grocery store. Just get out of your house and do what you do. When your life seems cool, people will latch onto your style.
  • Relax, don’t push your style on others. Everyone hates a person that is like “Yo checkout my new Tee.” Not pushing your style on others shows a confidence that you believe in what you are supporting through your style. Myself for example, I am sent tons of merchandise from companies. Some I give away, but the truly respectable companies I educate myself on the way they operate and wear it with pride.
  • Be your self. While it’s a good idea to take societies boundaries into consideration, don’t let them effect you too much. Everyone can be an idol to somebody.

Really, that's all there is to it. I'd even recommend starting a blog to let people know what your doing. It will ad local credibility like you wouldn't believe.

Interview with RedLotus Clothing

cool t shirt One of my biggest goals with this blog, is to expose companies to the public in ways not usually done. Especially small companies that are still growing and often aren't given the voice of larger companies. With so many of the little guys around I think its important to differentiate between them.

In conjunction with this I recently had the opportunity to interview Annie Le, the CEO and Creative Director of RedLotus Clothing. Your can visit the RedLotus Web Site here, and I encourage you to read the following interview to get some insight into them as a company!

RedLotus Clothing Web site

What is the meaning behind the name Red Lotus?

Well when I was in the planning stages of the company it cool t shirtwas really important to me to have a name that has a significant meaning, not only to me but ideals that I would encompass what I wanted the line to stand for…really difficult right? The Red Lotus is the Buddhist flower of the heart; it stands for love, passion, compassion, loyalty and purity. I chose this because it I felt that those are the things that I felt for the clothing line and those are the things that I feel are important in my life overall.

It's clear that one of your main objectives is to offer fashion conscious, as well as environmentally conscious clothing. What is the biggest challenge with meshing the two?

It’s actually a lot more difficult than you would think. Because the organic cool t shirt(eco-friendly movement) is still new in fashion it’s difficult to make clothes are don’t look organic or earthy but fashion conscious. The challenge was to be able to break out of that mold and make the organic clothing fashionable meaning cuts, color and feel. Feel was probably the most difficult…it was really my biggest concern to make organic clothing that looks like all the other pieces in the line.

What is your personal favorite item in your lineup? Why?

Oh that’s a difficult question…I have a lot of favorites or really I’m so close cool t shirtto the line all the pieces are like my babies…ha ha. But if pressed I would say that the Lotus Flower Sheer Crew is my favorite women’s shirt, the Lotus Flower Logo Hoodie is my favorite women’s Hoodie, the Dreamcatcher Ribbed Crew is my favorite Men’s Shirt and the Flash Hoodie is my favorite Men’s Hoodie. I love the designs…I think they really stand out and are in consistent rotation in my wardrobe.

When the people behind Red Lotus aren't making cool tees and hoodies what are you guys doing?

Oh I think the thing we love doing the most is relaxing…I personally like to just hang out with my friends have a good glass of wine and talk. Doesn’t really matter where we are at…I think we all have fun whenever we are together and be ourselves.

Red Lotus has been around for a little less than a year, how have things changed since day one for you?

For me things have changed a lot…instead of thinking what can we do it’s more like ok what are we going to do next. Other ideas come into the mix as more and more people learn about the brand. Between the collections, we work hard to bring the clothes directly to the people through events and promotions which is one of the fun parts of being in this cool t shirtbusiness. Which is why we have the events section because I want everyone to know where we are going, come out, meet us and possibly get some free clothes…wink wink? The first day all that I was thinking about was ok what am I going to design and how will I produce it then it moved into how are we going to let everyone know that a new brand is out there then focus on the customer to process order promptly and with the best service possible and then we start the process all over again.

Has it been a struggle convincing buyers that organic is the way to go in the clothing industry?

It is hard because it’s a new concept…up till now most conventional store haven’t’ really focused a lot on organic products. But I think as buyers find that this is something their customers will want in their stores it will get easier. But at the same time, some buyers can’t tell that the clothes are organic until we tell them then it’s a shock ha ha…I love that part.

What plans do you have to expand your product lineup for this year? Anything big we should look out for?

Expanding the line is always something in the back of my mind and I cool t shirt would ideally like to bring in at least one or two new products to the line with each collection. I want this line to evolve into a complete street wear line so I have plans to move into more outerwear, swimwear, underwear, pants, dresses…you name it I want to eventually have it in the line. Jeans will probably be the final frontier for me but when I get there I’ll feel like the line is complete. The company and line is a work in progress and you never know what we will come up with next.

Many of my readers are overseas, any plans for international shipping?

I definitely have plans to ship internationally. It’s basically a logistics things at this point…just getting all the pieces together to make it all happen. So far my international shipping are friends from other countries so visit, end up buying clothes for their friends to take it home. But I doubt that will work on the global scale. But yes definitely in the near future I want to be able to ship internationally.

Thank you for your time, anything you would like to add?

Thanks for the interview…I want to add that this is something that I have wanted to do since I was little I’m just happy to be able to do something that I love and it’s always my goal that the people who were RedLotus love it as much as I have loved creating it for them.

__________

cool t shirt As you can see, RedLotus is a chill group of friends that are trying , and succeeding, in the clothing industry. Buying organic fabrics is important, more important than I think anyone truly realizes right now, and its growing companies like RedLotus that are necessary in the market to get organics to be taken seriously eventually by larger corporations. Its a long process, but you got to save the world one step at a time. Help RedLotus save the world and buy their clothes!

Interview with Robert Goldbach of ShirtCity and Scribtee!

cool urban fashion tee scribteeSo I'm sure you've all heard of a little company called Threadless, a web site that started as a design competition and has grown into a monster of the design world. Many people think Threadless is the only game in town, If you think this you are surely mistaken. There are many others out there, but none in my opinion has the growing power of Scribtee!

Scribtee, much like Threadless, takes user submitted designs and prints them on t-shirts. I recently had the opportunity to Interview Robert Goldbach, part of the marketing crew for Scribtee. Robert Emailed me to make me aware of some new submissions and when I checked them out I couldn't resist the opportunity to learn more about the company, and I'm sure my readers feel the same!

Here We Go:

Name of yourself, your Company (and position within), and Location?

My name is Robert Goldbach and I work for Shirtcity/ Scribtee. I'm one of the marketing crew in the relatively new marketing office in Berlin, Germany, responsible for blog contacts.

What is the difference between Shirtcity and Scribtee? Are those two companies or one? cool urban fashion scribtee

Scribtee is like the little brother of Shirtcity which is the thing that started it all. The business of Shirtcity is Print-on-demand as you may know it from Cafepress, Spreadshirt or Zazzle. We came up with this idea in 2001 and were the first company ever to offer an online-shirt designer.

This baby constantly grew, MyShirtcity.com was established to offer free merch-shops for everybody that doesn't want much fuzz with expensive high runs of pre-printed T-Shirts. Go there, design your shop, link it and you're in business. For this we chose flex print as a method: you don't need costly silk screens that you never use again, the plotter cuts it out, we press it to shirt, and the results are really good. Better than you could ever do with a marker and a ruler.
Then we saw people doing really good designs for their own shirts and said, hey, let's have a design competition to honor these and a member community. Bang, there was the ShirtcityClub.

Then really cool designs like "Just loving music" came in and won at our ShirtcityClub.com design contest. Those were too complex and had too many colors to print them on shirts with flex print and just too good to sell them with digital transfer (which is more suitable to print baby photos as a gift for grandma). Quality designs should go on quality shirts: we had those screen printed, chose only top quality blanks and gave the whole thing a new name.

I tell this whole story because I don't want Scribtee to be regarded as another company that goes "Oh, let's copy threadless, rip off designers and make shit loads of money out of the sales". That has never been the idea.

Who is your clothing supplier? Any Particular reason?

For Scribtee we use blank shirts by Continental Clothing and American Apparel. Continental makes really good shirts: they fit well, they're soft and comfortable and last a while, not like these thin shirts who have holes after five washes. Plus, their cotton is produced eco-friendly and fair trade. Same for American Apparel, of course. At Shirtcity there are lots of other products such as tank tops, caps, sweaters, underwear... there we print on Anvil, JT's, Fruit Of The Loom, Sonar and others... the product range is constantly evolving.

Have you ever had a design that was simply too hard to screen print?

No. We have design rules, and if the submissions disregard them (like if they use more than 5 colours), they don't participate. Easy as that. Plus, the submissions are mostly really well executed.

What happens to your old screens?(Thrown out, washed, ect)

Sorry, I'm not too well informed about the printing process, this is done by professionals over at Sumoprint, and they are far from here, in Neu-Ulm (Bavaria), as is our main office and production site.

What is the hardest thing about running a competition based T-Shirt Company?

The hardest thing is running it the same time as your main business with not one person more. For christmas for example, Shirtcity kept us busy, the demand for customized shirts and gift items is high at that period, as you can imagine. We fell a bit back these days, but we're confident we can put out new Scribtees more regularly.

cool urban fashion scribteeHave you found a change in contribution quality/quantity recently? What Do you attribute this to:

The increase in both quality and quantity is not a change as such, more a constant development. Scribtee started in October last year & we think it was a good start. The word has spread amongst the designers, and it ought to spread some more, but we're happy to already receive submissions from T-Design veterans such as Draco who has already a history of winning at Threadless, DBH and LaFraise. He made "Watch out for your own desires". Most of our winning designs came from Spain, and if we can attract this kind of creative people in the other countries as well, the site will be even more exciting. 500$ for the winner plus free shopping for 50$ should be a good argument for everybody to participate.

What is your personal favorite design you have ever seen submitted?

"Aerosol Queen" by Muro was really a fav and I was happy to see it printed. Especially with the grey accents that our graphic service added it is even better. The style is dope. "You are what you eat" is a bright idea and I still love it.

Have any of your favorites not made the cut?

Spontaneously I remember one neat design with buddha and some duckies (pictured to the left)... it didn't win but it can still be purchased at the ShirtcityClub: http://www.shirtcity.com/shop/index.php?club=cs&id=u_18_404813&id2=ts&id3=51&id4=vorne with our usual flex print which is almost as good.

On the whole, is there a difference between the amount of male/female orders?

None worth mentioning.

cool urban fashion scribtee

Differentiate yourself from Threadless in one sentence:

Tough question. When I did a Threadless purchase a while ago I was a bit disappointed, since some of them were stained with black ink traces and my shirt felt a bit rough. I think Scribtee quality can top that. But I don't want to say anything bad about threadless, since they do such a good job. One difference is that we don't start from scratch, with Shirtcity we already got a solid structure to build on. So the sentence may be something like "We're younger, we're from Europe, we think global from the start and we just started growing."

Anything you'd like to tell your foes, fans, or superstars such as Rambo?

Dear fans, we love you too, without your submissions, ideas, feedback and purchases we'd be nothing. Dear foes, I hope you don't exist. Dear Rambo, if you want to rip a shirt off your body, don't use a Scribtee, they deserve more love. Dear superstars, Scribtees are really affordable, especially for you.

Thank you for your time Rob!.

It's you I have to thank!

_____________________

As you can see, Scribtee isn't just a copy of something that has been done before. They are better! And even though they are relatively new on the scene, their backbone has been around for a while and these guys are just gonna keep growing. Plus they are from Europe, the same place that designs every other thing in the world worth a damn.

Support the new designs by picking them up at the Scribtee Store and voting on your new favorites!

What is Streetwear?

One of the main jobs as a blog owner is to identify keywords. Keywords that connect people with content they are seeking. While I know the content on this site is top notch, I often struggle to put words to what I find. I'm aware that the technical term of the clothing I research and review is "Streetwear", but thats not how the people define it. To me this has come as a big surprise and has lead me to the question, What is streetwear?

Is it Hip Hop Clothing? Is it Punk Clothing? Is it pop culture inspired?

The answer is that the category of streetwear has grown to cover all of these. Judging by the number of orders placed as Karmaloop in a day, and the Number of searches placed for Hip Hop Clothing, Punk Clothing, Urban Clothing, and other similar terms- The people have defined streetwear simply as EVERYTHING.

Streetwear is Hip Hop Clothing.
Streetwear is Punk Clothing.
Streetwear is Pop Culture Clothing.
Streetwear is Urban Clothing.

Peace.

LifeLock: Protect your Identity

Yes, this is a product blog. Which is why I'm choosing to blog about Identity Protection from LifeLock. Everyday I write articles about products available online, and everyday people use their credit cards to buy these products. While all of the sites I refer to directly from here are secure, It is still possible for your credit card information to be stolen using other services. Through this hackers can get your social security number, which allows them to easily open credit cards in your name. LifeLock offers you $1million in protection, at the cost of just $10 a month. The best way to look at it is...Why not?

Ultra-efficient LCD computer monitors are 25% more efficient than the ENERGY STAR standard. Ultra-efficient monitors can save up to $290 in utility bills and reduce up to 1,000 lbs of CO2 emissions over the life of the monitor. The monitor itself only costs $240...that means if you buy this over the course if its life you'll spend $50 less than you would have if you keep using the inefficient monitor you are right now.

Toshiba 17" Satellite Gaming Laptop

Toshiba makes quality products at a reasonable price. To most of us heavily interested in the streetwear and sports industries our first priority is not to have the fastest computer on the block. We do however want something that is stylish, reliable, and fast enough to do the Web 2.0 stuff on the internet we want to do. The Satellite T7100 Laptop with Intel Core 2 Due Processor is that laptop. Marble finished exterior, with all the goodies we need on the inside.

Sony Playstation 3: The Blu-RayPlayer of Choice

With the imminent death of HD-DVD, every family in America needs to start thinking about getting a Blu-Ray player. Sure they are more expensive, but its what won the war...and it is a cost that everyone will have to absorb to remain current in the technology world. My personal recommendation is to buy a 40GB Playstation 3, they are available for practically the same price as any Blu-Ray player and offer capabilities far beyond what a simple player could do. USB ports, WI-FI, Storage Capabilities, Browsing capabilities, and of course- The Most Advanced Gaming in the world.
